My Funny Valentine
This collection was inspired by the lyrics of "My Funny Valentine" which is about finding a lover's imperfections endearing.
Written by Lorenz Hart, the lyrics subvert the traditional gushing love song by delighting in the dimensional humanity of real people, replete with real human failings. The singer adores their Valentine exactly as they are and would not want them to change.
Some interpretations suggest that the lyrics are a love letter from Hart to himself, who was a closeted gay man. When interpreted this way, the song becomes Hart's cry for acceptance, telling himself he is worthy of love.
